What do you mean there’s a queer movie with RuPaul, Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall? Yes bitch there is, and do you want to know something even more maddening? IT’S FROM 1999!!!!!!!
If you’ve ever watched this movie, especially as a queer person it has a lot of personal value, maybe it was the first queer movie you ever watched, easily explainable to parents as just a straight gal cheerleader movie.
Beyond that, though, But I'm a Cheerleader is a truly great movie that captures the spirit of a gay American society still recovering from the AIDS epidemic and trying to find its place in the 21st century.
The character Megan (my queen Nattasha) is sent to a residential conversion camp called True Directions due amend her “lesbian tendencies”
True Directions is an establishment with idealised 1950s suburban marriage values, complete with sterile sex acts and immaculate floors. But I'm a Cheerleader who uses the candy-colored set design to create this hard, brittle shell of heterosexuality and heteronormativity surrounding everything.
In this madness these traumatised baby gays find queer joy with each other (in more ways than one). What do I mean by this? Homo watch the movie eto find, I promise you won’t regret it.
Enter the world of audacious heterosexuality, scenes or campiness and queer joy.
